Lyne Lucien
Lyne Lucien is an award winning Haitian artist based in Brooklyn. Her work is rooted incomm unity and inspired by her vibrant upbringing in Haiti. She aims to expand the visual narrative and vocabulary around blackness to include the Caribbean voice. She believes that when she represents her community as it truly is, she not only honors her country, but also preserves its history and legacy.
Lyne’s style is vibrant, optimistic, and whimsical. She draws inspiration from her richest nostalgic childhood memories and blurs them with the most vivid childhood fantasies, daydreams, and desires. In blending both her physical reality, and the worlds she fantasizes about, she aims to to honor her people as they are and honor her imagination.
Fantasy is at the core of Lyne’s work. She believes that blackness is not a monolith and by infusing whimsy, she challenges the stereotypes around black identity in the United States. Blackness doesn't have a singular identity and Lyne aims to show more diverse visual narratives about black immigrant diasporas around the world.
She draws from Haiti's resilient history, breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and abundant people as inspiration. Her illustrations are published in various publications from NYMag, to The Atlantic to NPR and more. She’s also created work for global brand campaigns and major clients including Porsche, Lifewtr, Walmart. Her work has made its way to museums, galleries, art spaces, and city-wide exhibition spaces. She’s exhibited original works at the Dupage Children's Museum, the Illustration Museum in New York, the Haitian Embassy, and the prestigious Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
